Caradog, King of Gwynedd
(c.750-798)
(Latin-Caratacus, English-Caractacus)
King Caradog ap Meirchion was a distant male-line descendant of King Cynlas of Rhos. The family appears to have remained important lords in Eastern Gwynedd long after they ceased to be Kings. During the squabbles between the joint-Kings Hywel and Cynan of Gwynedd in the late 8th century, Caradog found himself in a position to seize power and proclaim himself King. His reign was probably short, for he died fighting Saxon invaders in 798.
