John Pherd
(Died 1225)
Abbot of Fountains
Bishop of Ely
Died: 6th May 1225
John Pherd was elected Abbot of Fountains in 1209. During the ten years of his rule there, he carried on many building works with great vigour and was afterward known as John De Fontibus. After the death of Eustace, Bishop of Ely, Geoffrey De Burgo was elected as his successor but, before the publication of the election, Richard of York was chosen in his place. He held office for five years without consecration, by which time, the Pope annulled both elections and nominated Abbot Pherd instead. He was also Treasurer of England for five years. Bishop Pherd died in 1225 and was buried before the altar of St. Andrew in Ely Cathedral.
