Wulfstan I
(Died AD 956)
Archbishop of York
Died: 26th December AD 956 at Oundle, Northants
Wulfstan I is said to have been raised to the See of York, in AD 928, by King Athelstan of Wessex who first incorporated Northumbria within the "Empire of Britain". After Athelstan's death, however, Wulfstan joined the Danish party and, in AD 947, assisted in making Eric Bloodaxe King of Northumbria. Eadred of Wessex, in AD 952, seized the Archbishop and imprisoned him at Jedburgh. The King, afterwards, allowed him to resume his episcopal functions at Dorchester-on-Thames; but Wulfstan died in AD 956 at Oundle, in Northamptonshire, and was interred there.
Edited from Richard John King's "Handbook to the Cathedrals of England: Northern Division" (1903).
