St. Wilfred II
(Died AD 745)
Bishop of York
Died: AD 745
St. Wilfred II - in whose favour St. John of Beverley resigned the See of York in AD 714 - was educated at Whitby Abbey. He later became one of the latter's pupils and then his chaplain. Little is known of him, though he furnished the altar of his cathedral with a splendid set of sacred vessels and was a munificent benefactor to various other churches and monasteries. He eventually resigned the See of York in AD 732, devoting the last portion of his life to solitude and prayer: in what place is uncertain. He died in AD 745 and was buried at Ripon, but his body appears to have been later translated to Canterbury in the mistaken belief that he was the greater St. Wilfred of Ripon.
Edited from Richard John King's "Handbook to the Cathedrals of England: Northern Division" (1903).
