Albert was the son of powerful and wealthy parents. He was "Vice-Dominus" or "Abbas" of Archbishop Egbert's minster school, before himself being consecrated to the Archiepiscopate on 24th April AD 767. The reputation of this school, which spread all over Europe, was due just as much to the zeal and learning of Albert as to the energy of his predecessor in the see of York. The great library there was chiefly collected by him during his many wanderings on the Continent, with Alcuin for his companion.
