Bishop of Wells
Archbishop of Canterbury
Died: 15th May AD 973

Berthelm was the Bishop of Wells, Dorset and other territories from AD 956. He appears to have become the chief minister of King Edwig All-Fair and, after the sudden and unexpected death of Archbishop Elect Aelfsige on the Continent, the King had him appointed to the Archiepiscopate of Canterbury (AD 959). However, Edwig himself died that same year and the new monarch, his brother, Edgar the Peaceable, removed the unpopular Berthelm for his "incompetence in enforcing discipline". The poor Archbishop was packed off back to Wells and St. Dunstan, Bishop of London, was appointed in his place.

Berthelm continued as Bishop of Wells until his death in AD 973. logo
