William De Brineston
(Died 1265)
Abbot of Whitby
Died: 1265
William De Brineston beacme Abbot of Whitby in 1158. During his abbacy, the abbey suffered a great reverse of fortune, falling greatly into debt through having to pay the costs of the struggle with Robert, Bishop of Carlisle, over the church of Crosby Ravensworth, which, after a prolonged contest in Rome, was decided adversely. He is said to have died of a broken heart, "without ever being reconciled to his enemies or showing any desire for having their excommunication taken off before he made his exit."
Edited from Frederick Ross' "The Ruined Abbeys of Britain".
