Your Yorkshire vacation package includes admission to the following British Heritage Properties.

Aldbrough Roman Town. Enjoy a scenic drive to the town of Uredale and visit of one of the northernmost Roman military outposts. The Romans enjoyed a comfortable life here, complete with entertainment as the large ampitheatre indicates. The Roman presence in Britain for over 400 years laid the foundation for much of British History.

Newby Hall. Begun in 1690, Newby Hall was extensively modified in the late 1760's by renowned architect Robert Adams. It houses an important collection of Roman and Greco-Roman statuary and an impressive collection of original Chippendale furniture. There are 25 acres of award-winning gardens to enjoy here as well. From here it is a short drive to the ancient market town of Ripon, with its Cathedral.

Fountains Abbey. Located on the banks of the River Shell, the 12th century abbey's English Gothic architecture reflects the lovely simplicity of the Cistercian way of life. It sits within the 800 acres of this World Heritage site, and makes for a fascinating excursion, as you enjoy the quiet beauty of the abbey as well as the splendor of Studley Royal Water Gardens.

Studley Royal Water Gardens. These magnificent gardens surrounding Fountains Abbey are a marvelous example of the classical 18th century Georgian water garden. Built by a retired Chancellor of the Exchequer and extended by his son, these beautiful gardens are complimented by "follies" and the artfully controlled flow of the River Skell.

Middleham Castle. This classic medieval castle, the childhood home of Richard III, is one of the largest strongholds of the North. It lies beside the River Ure on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. From its imposing keep you'll see the commanding views that made this an enviable military site.

The Grand Assembly Rooms. Dine in this magnificent, columned Georgian hall, built by the Earl of Burlington in 1730. It is the oldest neo-classical building in Europe. Now owned by the York City Council, the restaurant offers an excellent menu.
Jorvik Viking Centre. Rightly one of the most popular attractions in York, the Centre offers a "time ride" to a Viking village, where you can see, smell and hear their way of life. You may then continue on to the Museum of Yorkshire which houses a rich collection of artifacts from Roman, Anglo Saxon and medieval times.

The Shambles. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the medieval town center, including the narrow medieval butchers lane, the "Shambles". This quaint street was designed so that the morning and afternoon shadows would keep the shops in perpetual shade thereby allowing the butchers to keep their wares cool; an important consideration before refrigeration.

National Railway Museum. This museum, one of the world's best, will take you to that bygone era when all of England traveled by rail. View a replica of "Stephenson's Rocket", the grand-daddy of all steam trains and the "Maillard", the fastest steam train, as well as the luxurious carriages once used by the Royal Family.

York Minster. The Minster, towering over the city of York, holds the distinction of being the largest Gothic church in England. Soaring columns, the choir screen displaying kings from 1066 to 1461, the beautiful ornamentation of the 14th century nave and the glorious east window are just a few of the delights in store for you in this fascinating house of worship.

Clifford's Tower, Fairfax House, the Treasurer's House. Stonegate and Lady Row are but a few of the sites in York. With so many interesting places to visit, you'll have a free afternoon to enjoy those which interest you the most.

Castle Howard. This castle is perhaps the best known and surely one of the most beautiful buildings in England. It was used by the BBC television series "Brideshead Revisited". Sir John Varbrugh, a gentleman and playwright with no previous architectural experience, was commissioned to design Castle Howard and went on later to design Blenheim Palace. Castle Howard took 60 years to complete and its grandeur is without equal in northern England.
