In the heart of County Kerry, by the River Caragh is the Glencar House Hotel
whose 250 year tradition of hospitality is as old as the trees beside it.
The hotel boasts panoramic views of the valley, woods and MacGillicuddy's
Reeks, Ireland's highest mountains. The Caragh is one of Europe's cleanest
and Ireland's best salmon rivers. The river and hotel have been held in the
highest esteem by ardent salmon anglers for over 200 years. All pools have
easily accessible banks and huts for rest and shelter. Beats are allocated
in rotation and the number of anglers per day is strictly limited. During
the salmon season (Jan17-Sept 30) there are two highlights: the run of
spring salmon of up to 16 lbs from Jan through Apr and that of the more
plentiful grilse of up to 4 - 6 lbs in May and June. At times of low water
in the rivers and streams, Lough Acoose, Caragh Lough and Cloon Lough yield
the best results. Many pools are a short walk from the hotel, other pools
and the loughs are easily accessible by car. A gillie with a thorough
knowledge of fish lies looks after the guests.
Ballynahinch Castle is in a wonderful setting, overlooking the Ballynahinch
River. It was once the home of Grace O'Malley, pirate queen of Connaught. In
1546 she married the warlike Donal O'Flaherty of Ballynahinch. The castle
has enjoyed many distinguished owners since then, including "Humanity" Dick
Martin and the Maharajah Ranjitsinhji - the famous and wealthy cricketer.
The castle dates from the 18th century and has been upgraded in recent times
to a four star hotel. The splendid dining facilities, with fresh home
produce and locally caught fish, are complemented by 28 beautiful rooms, all
tastefully furnished and ensuite. The relaxed informality of the bar makes
it the perfect place to unwind in the evening. The castle also has 350 acres
of wooded grounds and walks and 13,000 acres of prime woodcock shooting. The
Ballynahinch River is two and a half miles long and drains a huge catchment
of several lakes and smaller rivers. All the fish entering this system must
first pass through the Ballynahinch Fishery. In addition to the river, the
fishery extends up through Loughs Inagh, Derryclare, and Ballynahinch.
Access to the river is excellent, as the road runs parallel to it for almost
its entire length. Footbridges and stiles add to the ease of access. Casting
is facilitated by some 72 casting piers, along the river. There are seven
salmon and four sea trout beats. Fly fishing only. Tackle, flies and
accessories are available for hire. The beats are fished in strict rotation
and catch records are readily available. A day spent on the Ballynahinch
Fishery in the heart of Connemara ringed by the Twelve Bens mountain range
is an experience never forgotten. Season: Salmon: May - September.
