What you'll see:
Your South of England vacation package includes admission to the following British Heritage Properties.
Salisbury Cathedral. Built in the 13th century, Salisbury is the tallest cathedral in all of England. It houses one of four surviving original texts of the Magna Carta. You may want to try your hand at brass rubbing in the Cathedral Cloisters.
Stonehenge. A mystery on the Salisbury plain. How and why were these massive stones transported and put into place?
Wilton House. One of England's great 16th century country homes. Wilton House is the ancestral home of the earls of Pembroke. The house is filled with fine furnishing and exceptional art including works by Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Rubens. The rose and water gardens and the 21 acres of woodlands are as beautifully tended as the interiors of this great home.
Portsmouth Harbor Cruise. Sit back and relax as the sites of this history filled port pass by. You'll see the birthplace of Charles Dickens, the city's Guildhall, the Round Tower, the Square Tower and "The Hard", as the quay is known.
H.M.S. Victory. Lord Nelson's flagship in the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805, when the British defeated the combined forces of the Spanish and French fleets. Lord Nelson died in this battle; a brass plate marks where he fell. You'll be amazed at the size and complexity of this great warship and the hardships under which the crew lived and fought.
Royal Navy Museum. Visit five galleries housing intricate ship models, dioramas of naval battles and a fine collection of ship's figureheads. You will be able to see the development of refinements of the ships when Britannia ruled the waves.
Winchester & Winchester Cathedral. From 827 and the reign of Egbert to 1066, Winchester was the capital of England, and its cathedral was the site of all coronations. The cathedral is among the finest in England. Dating from 648, England's history can be traced here, from the tomb of Alfred the Great.
Winchester. You'll visit the City Mill, now a National Trust property, which was built in 1744 over the River Itchen at the bridge credited to St. Swithun. You'll also enjoy seeing the Great Hall, the only remaining structure of the 13th century Winchester Castle built by Henry III. The Hall houses an ancient table which many consider to be King Arthur's "Round Table".
Chawton Cottage. This is the unprepossessing house where author, Jane Austen lived from 1809 until her death in 1817. The definitive chronicler of society during her time, she completed the final drafts of "Emma", Persuasion" and "Mansfield Park" at Chawton Cottage.

| To make the most of your time, we recommend staying at a central location within easy reach of all attractions. |
The historic harbor city of Portsmouth is one option for your "home base" during your tour of the South of England. The city has held its place in history for centuries as a point of departure and as the major port of Britain's Royal Navy. One of the hotels that could serve as "home" is The Hospitality Inn. It is a traditionally built, charmingly restored, English hotel ideally located and offering stunning views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Breakfasts are served in the hotel's sunny dining room and each guest room is equipped with coffee/tea service, color television and all amenities. |
New Forest. The New Forest was created by King William in 1079 to provide 200 square miles of pristine royal hunting grounds. Explore this beautiful national nature preserve, stopping for a stroll through a sylvan glade. We will doubtlessly encounter a few of the Forest's semi-wild ponies which roam the meadows.
Beaulieu Abbey, which means "beautiful place", was established by King John in 1204 for the Cistercian monks. In the mid 16th century, King Henry VIII sold the abbey to the Montagu family. Their home since then, The Palace House, once the abbey gatehouse, was converted into a private residence in 1538 and today is surrounded by lovely gardens.
National Motor Museum. You don't have to be a car buff to enjoy this museum. Its diverse collection ranges from 1980's "horseless carriages" to land speed record holders like the 1927 Sunbeam and the jey powered "Bluebird", as well as family cars from the '30's, '40's and '50's.
D-Day Museum. Portsmouth was a major departure point for the Allied Forces of the Normandy invasion. This memorial museum recounts the preparations, and the day of the landing with may exhibits and the impressive 272 foot "Overlord" tapestry, named after the invasion's code name.
