Tour of Edinburgh. Known as "The Athens of the North" Edinburgh (pronounced "Edinbrough") is magnificently situated on seven hills. You'll see the city landmarks, including Calton Hill, The Scott Monument and St. Giles Cathedral as you pass through this city's mixture of architectural styles.

Edinburgh Castle. Sitting on the core of an extinct volcano, this imposing castle seems to grow out of the rock itself, dominating the city's skyline. While it's history dates to the fourth century, the castle was rebuilt during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The one-time home of Mary Queen of Scots and birthplace of her son, James, it's tumultuous past is sure to interest the history buff.

The Georgian House. Located on Charlotte Square, this outstanding example of the period was built at the end of the 18th century. The furnishings on the lower floors are in keeping with the period and superbly reflect the social conditions of the time.

Abbotsford House. This unusual structure, built by Sir Walter Scott, started out as a small, damp farmhouse and was transformed into a small, castellated mansion. Education reformer John Ruskin later referred to the building as "the most incongruous pile that gentlemanly modernism ever devised." Still owned by the Scott family, it displays a wonderful collection of armor and Scottish artifacts.

Melrose Abbey. Founded in 1136 by David I, it is one of the many Border Abbeys. After suffering repeated destruction by the English in the 14th century, it was rebuilt by Robert the Bruce. His heart is buried here. Sir Walter Scott was instrumental in the 19th century repair of this Gothic abbey known for its ornate stonework.

Scott's View. So named because this was the spot from which Sir Walter Scott enjoyed viewing the beautiful Eildon Hills and the surrounding countryside. As you share Sir Walter's view, perhaps you will receive a like inspiration.
Bannockburn Heritage Centre. Built on the site of Scotland's greatest victory in its fight to remain independent from the English, the Centre tells a victor's story. You will also see the Borestone site, the command post of Robert the Bruce before the battle, as well his memorial statue in full armor astride a charger.

Stirling Castle. The history, architecture and location combine to make this the grandest of all Scottish castles. A site of historical significance for several thousand years, the current buildings date from the 14th to the 16th centuries. James V commissioned French masons to create the beautiful stonework. Later James VI remodeled the Chapel Royal and was the last king to reside here.

Glenturret Distillery. Because the production of Scotch Whisky has played such an important role in the economic development of Scotland, you'll enjoy a tour of Scotland's oldest distillery, established in 1775. Learn the malt whisky process as you listen to your guide explain how the "water of life" is created. Before leaving the distillery enjoy a dram to sample the finished product for yourself!

Dunfermline Abbey & Palace. Founded in the 12th century, the remains of this Benedictine monastery have been absorbed into the parish church. Be sure to view the beautiful Norman nave with its ornate columns. While the heart of Robert the Bruce is buried in Melrose Abbey, the remainder of his body is buried here in the choir.

Palace of Holyroodhouse. Scandal, murder and mayhem surround this famous dwelling. Mary lived here for 16 years, marrying twice, debated with John Knox and witnessed the murder of her secretary Rizzio, by her husband and his henchmen. Today the Palace is one of the Queen's official residences.

Princes Street. Enjoy the remainder of the morning at leisure in the city center to browse the many shops and stores lining Princes Street, or stroll through the beautiful Waverly Park prior to our noon train departures out of historic Waverly Station.
